Intel Atom N280 vs. Atom N450

Since Intel upgraded their Atom CPUs from N270 and N280 to the latest Atom N450 where they integrated the graphics chip into the CPU, we wondered if the new N450 performs better than N280. We check both with some benchmarks.

Intel Atom N280 vs. Atom N450 Benchmark

Intel Atom N280 PassMark Results:
CPU Compression: 1541.3KB/s
CPU Encryption: 6.4MB/s
Find Prime Number: 98.3 operations per second
CPU Integer Math: 22.5 million operations per second
CPU Floating Point: 98.4 million operations per second
CPU Mark: 243.5

Windows Experience Index: CPU Sub-Score 2.3

Intel Atom N450 PassMark Results:
CPU Compression: 1511.7 KB/s
CPU Encryption: 6.3 MB/s
Find Prime Number: 93.2 operations per second
CPU Integer Math: 22.2 million operations per second
CPU Floating Point: 92.8 million operations per second
CPU Mark: 232.7

Windows Experience Index: CPU Sub-Score 2.3

Our conclusion:

Based on the numbers shown above, there seems to be no significant difference between the performance of the Atom N280 vs N450. It looks like the Atom N450 is basically an Atom N280 embedded with a GPU (i.e. GMA 3150) so the biggest advantage here is that the package uses less power than the previous one.

This means more battery life for the entire system, a performance claimed by Intel that reaches up to 20% more.
